An Everlasting Companionship: The Doctor and his T.A.R.D.I.S

When you hear the term ‘the Doctor and his companion’, you immediately envision the Doctor with either Rose Tyler, River Song, Amy Pond, or the so many others that the Doctor has travelled with on his seemingly endless journey across all of time and space. However, what most of us forget is that one companion who has been with the Doctor since the beginning of his journey. Who was the one who stole a Time Lord just because she wanted to see the whole universe?

It was none other than the T.A.R.D.I.S. She has been the one who has forever and more been with the Doctor during his time of joy and disappointment, no matter who the Doctor turned into, and whom he brought along, the T.A.R.D.I.S was always there like a solid rock much like a promise that sustains the Doctor through his many forms.

The bond that the Doctor and the T.A.R.D.I.S share makes you wonder when and if you will ever be able to find that companion of yours who will stay by your side and be worthy of comparison to the T.A.R.D.I.S.  Will you find someone who doesn’t always say what you want to hear, but definitely says what you need to hear? Someone whom you can go to at the end of your day when your shoulders are drooped because of all the burdens and worldly sorrows, and that person will soothe you and calm you, allowing you to recuperate in their presence?

How many of us are truly so lucky as to find our own Doctor or T.A.R.D.I.S? it is a question that I have often asked myself, and so far it hasn’t happened. Oh wait, it did happen once, almost, but he didn’t quite turn out to be the Doctor, no, he was more like an empty shell of person worthy of being a valued addition to the hoard of Cybermen, lacking any and all emotions, and completely self-centred.

Maybe someday, one day, one can only hope that one finds someone who is like the Doctor or the T.A.R.D.I.S, whom they can be the perfect companion to. Someone you can steal away from the world, and take away with you to your own Mind Palace. Someone old, someone new, someone borrowed, someone blue.

When Rose is lost and Donna forgets,

When Martha leaves and the Ponds are taken,

When River bids goodbye and Clara seems impossible,

Who is it that keeps the Doctor sane?

It’s me; I think you call me Sexy.

Doctor Who Life Lessons

Yeah, I know I have been going on about how Doctor Who changed my life; but does one really ever stop? Nah, cos once the Doctor enters your life, there is no end to the number of marvellous things that you can learn from him. However, there are some things that get seared onto your mind so much so that they become your guideline for life. Here are some of the things that I have learnt from the Doctor and the show.

Growing up is no fun if you can’t act childish sometimes. Yeah, that’s true, cos being all grown up and serious all the time is no fun at all. You will probably die with a permanent frown on your forehead. The Doctor has lived for over a thousand years and yet he has a glimmer of child-like innocence and enthusiasm in him that is so lovable and necessary; necessary because if he didn’t have that his long life and all the things that he had seen would have made him a very old and bitter man. So don’t be old and boring and bitter, be spectacular like the Doctor.

Change is the only constant in life. The whole premise of Doctor Who revolves around the concept of change, and yes, I agree, most Whovians do not adapt to change easily, but can you blame them? Wouldn’t it rip your heart apart when you come to love a Doctor, or rather a version of the Doctor and then he leaves and regenerates into someone entirely different? Well, let’s leave that discussion to another rainy day, what I am trying to say is that change is all around us, we only have to be accepting. We are changing, people around us change, and we have to accept that if we wish to be happy.

Everything has its time and everything ends. Yes, this is one of the saddest things in all of time and space, and yet the ultimate truth. Old things must end and make way for new ones, be it a relationship, a phase in life, even the life of the Doctor, it all eventually ends. Nothing goes on forever, it is more of a ‘till it lasts’. Time can be rewritten, but not all of it, not the fixed times, and not the end.

Image

Goodbyes are important. I say this not just as something that I learnt from the 10th Doctor who burnt up the sun just to say goodbye to Rose Tyler (bitch please, that was adorable), but because I personally know how gut wrenching it can be when someone you love and adore with all your heart and soul just leaves without having the decency to utter a simple ‘goodbye’. It may not rip a hole in the universe, but it sure as hell rips a hole in the core of that person’s soul, and you can’t have that on your conscience, can you?

Being weird is really a good thing. Yeah, all the bowties and the Stetsons and the suspenders and the long coats may seem like the thing of the past, but not really. These quirks and eccentric behaviour is what makes you different from all the millions of humans who behave more like clones of the Cybermen, what with their same old boring rules and their constant need to ‘fit in’. Name one person who is well loved and well known, and is not unique or weird is one way or another. There is none.

A Sonnet the Doctor Who Way

If you were to woo a Whovian, how would you do it? Cos mind you, the usual stuff just isn’t going to cut it. Here is a helping hand, a sonnet that would melt any Whovian’s heart like it was made of wax. Trust me, I am a Whovian.

I Shall

I shall be by your side, for better or worse, just like the TARDIS,

I shall exterminate your sadness and loneliness like the Daleks,

I shall upgrade your happiness and smile like the Cybermen.

I shall guard you like the ultimate Centurion, which would make Rory proud,

I shall swallow the time vortex if it means that I can be by your side again,

I shall love you even if we end up in parallel universes, never to meet again,

I shall find you, no matter where you go, I will always find you.

I shall stare unblinking at the Weeping Angels so that you may rest your weary eyes,

I shall stand in the way of their touch so that you may remain safe.

I shall be the Impossible Girl, always saving you from yourself,

I shall scatter myself throughout time and space so as to rescue you, every time.

I shall await you at the Bad Wolf Bay, and burn up the sun just to say goodbye,

I shall not wander off, or ask stupid questions, and above all,

I shall trust you.
